Last weekend boasted exceptionally fine weather.
I choose the Sunday for a trip to the stream.
Fall was in the air, fields harvested … the swifts already migrating back to Africa.
With a relatively dry week I expected the stream to be at a low stage.

The stream was low indeed and it was also pretty clear.
There was a warm breeze blowing with but very bearable when under the canopy of trees
that dotted the stream.
I fished the most accessible section of the stream as I had good results there on previous sessions.

My hope was to catch some fish on the dry fly and maybe the one or other trout.
Despite the clear warm weather there where not many insects flying so top action
was almost non-existent. I spotted some dace and tried a large selection of flies on them.
The best I could do was for them to inspect the fly and then reject it at the last moment.

I spotted a rainbow trout in the surface whom was also resistant to any dry fly I dropped.
After presenting anything from sedges to mayflies I tried nymphing.
The squirmy yield a half hearted attack but the trout was not convinced.
A dragging with the streamer failed to get any takes.

Nymphing finally yielded a trout but it was the smallest rainbow I ever caught.
I switched to fishing nymphs and that yielded some roach and dace at various spots.
At a spot that regular held large dace I tried the sedge again in order to get a fish on the dry fly.
After some heart-stopping takes I finally bagged one on the sedge.

I came along one of my friends and talked shop.
While I was doing that I noticed a consistent rise and knew it was from a trout.
As my friend went on his way I tried to nail that fish but it was rising in a tight spot.
My cast where to clumsy and it resulted in the trout racing past me for safer grounds.

I had one last shot at a trout when I hooked one at a spot where a small creek flows into the main stream.
That creek dumps water from a treatment plant but it is pretty clean water.
A drift near one of the tree roots yielded an instant hit.
The tippet I fished was light though and my attempt to prevent the fish from running in the
brushwork backfired … not at the fly disintegrated.
Called it a day after that breakoff and went for dinner.

I went out on Sunday to the lower section of the stream once again chub fishing.
Blue skies and hot weather provided ideal conditions for this species.
On the last trip I fished a section where I spotted a lot of fish but this time I spotted
just a few small fish.

I went further downstream and checked out the cascade dams that replaced an
inaccessible weir.
I spotted a big chub but there was no way I could present a fly there due to the
current and plant growth.

At the end of the cascades a tree provided some shade at a small pool, it just looked fishy.
The bank was steep though, about 10ft sheer 90 degree drop off.
I tossed a hopper blindly under the tree and boy a big chub nailed it instantly.
Now I had to figure out how to get down to the water.
Only way was to slide down through the shrubs to land on the rocks.

In the meantime the chub had managed to dive under a deadfall and the leader
was tangled in a branch.
When I tried to untangle the leader the chub bolted and bend out the hook, bummer.
I found some other fish but none where inclined to take the fly.

At what I figured was the best spot I finally caught the first fish of the day on the hopper.
It was not a monster but at least a fish.
Soon I came across a larger fish and it took the hopper with gusto.
The problem I faced to land the fish was once again the steep bank and my silly trout net.
I slid halfway into the water and could land the fish … but I could net get back onto land.
The steep muddy bank just gave way so all I could do was to wade to the nearby bridge and
crawl up to the shore.

I spotted many chub and managed to loose two big fish in the process.
And again I suffered from that early strike syndrome jerking the fly out of the chub’s mouth.
Many times chub would inspect the fly first before gulping it slowly down and then
anxiety would get the better of me.

The last spot of the day was at the feeder stream where the shallow section in front of weir
boasted hordes of chub including two big ones.
I tossed the hopper near one of the big fish and it came cruising for the fly.
This time I waited but too long as I allowed it to spit the fly out before I could strike.

The banks at the last spot where fully overgrown so you could hardly walk let alone spot
the potholes made by the rat population.
I made it a couple feet upstream when I spotted once again a big chub.
The bankside vegetation shielded me so the chub did not see me coming and nailed the hopper
as it landed on the water.
The nearby gauge station boasted a nice stairway down to the water so I could land the fish easily.
All in all a good day for chub hunting.

I planned on day two to hit all the spots were I had missed trout a day earlier but
somehow it did not go to plan.
Bites where less and I only spotted one bow wave from a fleeing fish.
It was also Sunday meaning the crowds for out and about, you could encounter
everything from dogs in the water to shady eastern European fisherman aka Ruski’s.

Seemed like the trout where gone and only the small stuff was biting.
To make matters worse I had forgotten to take refreshments with me.
It was in the afternoon that I figured I had to make a plan B and off course it involved the pub.
The pub was crowded, at least the outside dining area was packed with day trippers and bikers.

The staff was running their legs of and some of the inpatient patrons where
whining about the waiting times of their orders.

For me it was pretty obvious that when the place is packed you have to wait
but some folks just have a too high expectancy pattern (I used that phrase a lot at work).
I sat inside … was noticed and soon had a cool wheat beer before my nose.
With the hot weather I went for the green stuff with as a starter a refreshing tomato / Mozzarella dish.
Main coarse was the bake feta cheese with a salad, topped off with bread and honey/mustard sauce.
And when I heard something about ice cream being available I choose that as dessert.

In the meantime the crowds diminished and the sun stood low in the sky.
Since the mill pool was adjacent to the pub I hopped into the waders and tried the pool.
The water was even lower than the other stream and pretty turbid.
I fished a streamer hoping to intercept a pike or a lost trout but it was dead.
Even the nymph hardly got any bites.
Last hope was to fish directly under the mill weir with a squirmy but that only yielded a small perch.

Fishing wise not that great but all in all an enjoyable day.

High summer and the water table was really low.
Choice of venue was coupled to the weather forecast as it seemed unsuitable
for chub sight fishing on the lower part of the stream.
My destination of choice was the upper part of the stream hoping to get a trout.

I blew the first chance as I felt the take but missed the fish, the hook came out
so that trout was not going to bite again on this day.
I did get fish be it mostly dace and oddly rudd on perdigon nymphs, squirmy’s and dry flies.
Fish were feeding both on surface and sub-surface.

The shallow water made fishing tough, lots of debris and off course no cover.
It had not decently rained for ages so extreme low water and slow moving current.
The lack of cover was pretty obvious when I noticed a trout making a run
for it well in advance of me trying to make a cast.

Third chance came at a pool where a sunken tree formed a dangerous snag.
I fished a nymph amongst the branches and again caught rudd.
I assumed the rudd came from the syndicate’s pond in the village which
was full of these fish.
That a decent trout was lurking in the branches was a suprise and with
the light leader I could not bully it around, the hook came out… bummer.
I then tried another approach and tossed the tiniest of streamer through
the pool and behold I caught a trout, not the same but nice anyways,

The last stop of the day was in the forest where it was again rudd and
roach that hit the nymph,
I tried the little streamer for a second time and again a hit of a trout but
also a quick exit of the hook.

It was a warm day so what better than to cool down in the pub.
I opted for the inside dining … closer to the bar so the glass stays full.
Menu of choice this time was the Chili cheese burger … pretty hot.
Dessert was the bee sting cake, with surplus strawberry’s.

Another hot weekend day thus again on the quest for a big chub.
This time I tried again at the home waters but I had difficulty finding fish.
Again the banks still overgrown so there was hardly an open space to
find to reach the water.

The feeder stream had visible fish and indeed some of the big boys.
The big mayfly did not work so I downsized to a crane fly pattern.
The cranefly did work as long as it hit the water, free drifting and the fish
showed no interest.
I got two of the smaller fish relatively fast,

I spotted again a pike along the bank, it had seen me first though and
retreated to deeper water.
Further upstream I noticed the big chub and I made a good cast near
them without scaring any fish.
One came up and nailed the fly, I battled the fish successfully but just
before I could net it the fish got off.

Back on the main river I battled the long grass and countless horse flies
to find any fish.
It was really hot and access to the water was virtually impossible due
to the tall grass.
I spotted a few fish moving but not the stationary feeding fish I wanted.
In the mean time the storks where circling overhead, a sign of summer.

I tried the feeder stream on the way back but in the late afternoon all
activity ceased.
Last stop off course the pub, as the clouds gathered and rain and thunder
where predicted I opted to sit inside.

As starters I ordered the Manta platte, a curry sausage with fries.
Next was the salad with baked feta cheese.
Skipped the desert as I was stuffed.
The beer garden had plenty of visitors, amongst them pagans who
ordered the strawberry beer .. beer with strawberry sirup and strawberries
(lady drink).
I made a picture of it otherwise you would not believe what savagery goes
on at this side of the pond.

Another sunny day was upon us so again back to the chub hot spots.
As it had not rained for ages the water in the stream was extremely
low and almost stagnant.
I did not manage to spot any large fish or many fish to be precise.

With the sun low in the sky I had again problems just seeing fish.
The many bow waves in the shallow water indicated to me that
the fish had none of such problems.

I finally spotted a collection of fish near a brigde.
The reaction to a dry fly landing in the water was not what I was hoping for.
The fish scattered with even the larger ones running scared.

Switched to a squirmy brought a small chub to surface and later on
a small sedge did the same.
The fish which I did not where totally uninterested in any flies I
offered them.
Hopefully some rain will fall soon to get some action started.

A bright sunny day just beckoned for chub fishing.
An early start was out of the question as it was fall and the morning
temperatures where quite low.
The first spot I visited boasted some chub and I had the first fish quite
early on.

A little walk along the stream revealed a very big chub in the middle
of the stream hovering in the surface.
I managed to put the fly right in front of the fish without scaring it
as I usually do.
The chub moved slowly towards the fly and tried to gulp it down.

Tried because yours truly was again to quick on the strike and yanked
the fly out of reach of the fish.
The fish submerged to be never seen again.
A trip to a feeder stream yielded chub nr. 2 of the day and later finally
the largest one of the day measuring 40cm.

Fishing was tough, quite some wind from the east and also a sun low
in the sky that made spotting fish very difficult for me.
Alas the fish had less problems seeing me … they ran …

I wondered if moving to the chub section on a day with fog and thick clouds would be a wise move.
On the other hand the low water at the upper reaches of the stream seemed equally a waste of time.

I arrived at the chub haunts and had difficulty spotting fish.
With some luck I managed to catch one chub near the bank who
failed to spot me.
I dropped the fly over the edge of the plants on the shore and got
an instant hookup.

Other fish I spotted ignored my fly all together, to smart to be
fooled by my attempts.
I witnessed the rare sight of an eel moving in the surface and if my
mayfly had not been stuck in the shrubs I would have tossed it in
front of the fish.

When the cloud cover lifted somewhat blue skies appeared, the
sun made it easier to spot fish.
I still struggled to sneak on to the chub which where in ample supply.
Plenty of opportunities but wary fish as expected in a small stream
with low water.

Before I caught fish nr. 2 I had some heart stopping moments when a
big chub hovered under the mayfly I tried to zip it in only to refuse
at the last moment.
I refrained from prematurely striking so I had the chance to target the
other chub nearby that swam upstream.
One cast near that fish was enough to entice a strike.

Time passed quickly and just before I decided to quit I made a second
pass at the fish I had scared off earlier.
Again the bank side vegetation obscured me from the fish and a cast
near the bank yielded fish nr. 3 of the day.

With three fish on the mayfly my day was made and so it was time
for a pub visit.
With temperatures on the low side a vest was required to enjoy the outside dining.
Fall is definitely around the corner.

Yesterday I met up with former colleges at the pub in Germany.
The company we worked for had been sold to a big corporation.
The new management ran the whole lot into the ground, we left.

I had some time to spare so I fished the stream in the morning.
Weather wise the rains had stopped at daybreak with the water
slightly up and murky.
It was strange that the perdigon did not draw strikes from shiners.
I hooked a nice trout and then knew why it was so quiet in the pool.

The perdigon did not perform liked I hoped it would.
I had to change to a squirmy worm to get things going again.
Mostly from small bottom feeders that bit the tail but I also managed a trout.
I stalked a larger trout when the skies suddenly darkened.
The rumbling sky above my head made me clear out the water fast.

I went to the pub and just as I was getting out of my waders the skies opened.
It poured but I made it more or less dry into the pub.
It did not take long before my former co workers arrived.
We talked about the old times while having lunch.

Off course I could not resist getting back in the stream after the meetup.
During the downpour the stream had swollen and pushed a lot of dirty water.
The squirmy was a producer due to it’s visibility in the murky water.
All in all a nice day, I cleared the premises around bat time aka sunset.
