HSK 10-2025

HSK 10-2025

We’ll, I mentioned in my previous HSK report I would do a re-run of the trip if possible.
So I talked to my supervisor at work to get some more time off which was no problem
as it was quiet on the project front.

I opted for the last week of the trout season in Germany, closing oct. 20th.
In the distant past the river I intended to fish would be open after that date
due to the fact that grayling where present.
The grayling season extends normally over the winter but alas not anymore on that stream.

Since the fishing had been slow during the past visit I opted not to buy day tickets for
my travel days .. too expensive for what was offered in my view.
My goal for this trip where to catch some grayling and take pictures of the fall colors.

Since I arrived early on my first day I decided to hike to the viewpoint on top of the hills.
I was not exactly well prepared as I had (in hindsight) the wrong coordinates and
got lost early in my hike … luckily I crossed a hunter who directed me in the right way.
As I went farther and farther up the hill I noticed lots of signs of wild boar tearing
up the soil next to the path.

I was up on the ridge in a pretty dark part of the forest when I heard something
moving in the forest.
The path I was on looked less travelled and it seemed to dead end so I got my
bearing and finally got the correct coordinates for the viewpoint.
Turned out I walked past it as I took a wrong turn.

The fishing, well as previously quite tough … although it had rained the waterlevel
had hardly risen. With the algae bloom ended the water was clear and littered with leaves.
Still the grayling bite was a lot better than a month before and I caught some nice fish.
The brown trout was bite was not as good, had difficulty finding fish and I
did not expect that at the end of the season the fishing club would be stocking new fish.

Having said that I did manage to catch some nice fish and my pb for brown trout.
That pb fish came on a dry fly in a very shallow part of the stream.
I had learned not to ignore the shallows and long casts with sedge pattern often
delivered fish from places I would normally pass.
The weather was usually pretty drab, light rain and fog  – overcast – low temps.

On my last fishing day the sun came out and a lot of sedges started to fly.
As it was in the weekend all day tickets had been sold out so fisherman where
everywhere and many spots had already been ploughed trough.
With no fish in the deeper pools my last chance of a good fish was the shallows
and just by luck I spotted a rising grayling and could nail it ending the trip
on a positive note.

Germany – HSK 08-2025

Germany – HSK 08-2025

Had not much to do at work so I decided a road trip might be in order.
Arranged time off, got the location sorted and went on my way.
Turned out to be a very tough trip fishing wise as the promised rain didn’t came
and the river was on the absolute low point with hardly any flow.
Still, I caught some fish and had a very good time being out and about.

Might try for a second trip before the trout season runs out.
Still have to to better with the big grayling… they eluded me.

HSK 10-2021

HSK 10-2021

Another pandemic year and again another plan B vacation.
Since Joe would not let me in I had to forge other plans and so I went to the
Hoch Sauerland region at the neighbors to the east.
With all kinds of fall weather I chased the trout and grayling and did pretty good.
Started fishing oct. 2nd and went through until the season ended on oct. 19th.

The fishing was good and one of my friends decided he had to go to the same
place where I was at just to have some decent fishing days this year.
Hopefully plan A (SW FL) can be executed next year.

Germany 25-06-2021

Germany 25-06-2021

Last Friday I went on a road trip to a tributary of the Ruhr river with some palls.
I had fished this river only on two earlier occasions at upstream sections.
When we arrived at the river the first thing we noticed where the large puddles
of water on one of the field roads leading to the water.
It obviously had rained pretty hard quite recently.

Once in the water it showed, visibility low and a strong current pushing along.
The part to fish was the adjacent bank but I went only half way as I did not
know the pitfalls of this river and the current was to strong in my book.
I did some blind casting tossing perdigons and squirmy’s at likeable fish
hideouts but did not got any bites.

There was one place where I noticed a fish, it was a big fish.
That fish made such a racket that I thought it was a Asp but my palls told
me it was resident big trout.
A rather smart one because whatever I tossed near be it streamer, squirmy or
large mayfly it would not fall for it.

The fast current and the lack of success made us relocate to an even wider
section of the river.
My palls had some success with French nymphing but I was not on my a-game.
I tried a calmer shallow section hoping for chub but I only got a few small chub
plus some assorted minnows.

Later in the day the question arose to find an alternative spot but as conditions
where off I rather would stay at the wide section hoping to see some rising fish
sometime.
To my surprise the rising fish came, suddenly fish where popping up in front and
behind me that I had not seen all day.
I quickly tied on a sedge and soon had several good hits and lost a few good fish.

That fast current was something I was not used to so I had some trouble with
getting the line in quickly enough.
A few fish did stick though, trout and grayling.
Just as I thought the bite was really on cloud cover got thicker and the rise stopped.
I was recalled from the water as it was dinnertime so we visited a pizza shop
for a quick bite to eat.

We where back at the water maybe short of an hour to see if a evening rise had
commenced but after checking out two spot we figured it would not happen.
I voted for the option to call it a day due to the high water and the lack of action.
At least I had caught some fish and had a nice day exploring new water.
This was a spot to revisited when the conditions would be better.

Harz 09-2020

Harz 09-2020

An opportunity arose to make a last minute fishing trip so plans where put into practice quickly to arrange another road trip.
The recent visit to the Harz region called for more and so we left for a
second trip at the end of the trout season for that region.
Conditions where excellent weather wise while fishing was not always
easy.

I set goals to catch browntrout, rainbowtrout and grayling and all those
goals where accomplished.
I was most pleased at catching the grayling as I had not expected such
large fish in the river.
When I fished a squirmy through a deeper pool I was amazed at what size grayling where chasing the fly.
Off course catching one on sight was the hightlight of the trip.

With international travel being restricted the local region was crowded.
That caused some challenges with dining as due to limited space
reservations where often required.
We managed to find less frequented places where you could dine without
reservations.
At some of the more popular places in town we where turned down but
also had some luck being the last guests admitted as the busy hours started.
