Flyfishing FWSW

Another hot spring day and this time I arrived early on my fishing location.
The windy weather continued and there was minimal surface actitivy in the morning.

A deep fished nymph yielded several roach from some pools.
When the sun was out the dry fly did take some dace but again debris
on the surface made the fish picky.
Lost one trout on the nymph but sight fished for another and hooked it in the end.
Quite a pleasant day to be fishing the stream.

Picture of the day was that of what I now know is an Andean goose, no idea how that bird ended up here.

It was a warm and quite windy day with a lot of insect activity .
I spotted a lot of grannom and hawthorn flies so I tied on a CDC F-fly and went looking for rising or surface feeding fish.
There was a lot of debris on the water and the fish which I spotted where
rather picky.
I managed to catch a few dace but a lot of offerings where bluntly ignored.
There where some larger fish in the slow moving stretch I fished which I
believed where trout as they behaved differently than the dace.
One of these fish was on stationary near the opposite bank I fished and
went for the F-fly as it came into view, unfortunately not a solid hookup.

With the arrival of the crowds I choose a more secluded spot and switched to fishing a small nymph.
I could spot a lot of fish behind some debris and caught several roach from under the submerged brushes.
Again I spotted a trout and got wind from the local anglers that the stretch had been recently stocked.
I ended the day in the forrest where surface activity dictated the use
of a dry fly.
Dace where feeding actively in one spot but I missed almost every take because these fish where so fast in taking the fly and rejecting it.
At one spot I missed the take of a larger trout but when I returned a while later and had a second go I got a good hookup.
The warm weather has been good for the fishing and I expect to see more
activity in the coming time.

It was pretty cold in the morning, temperature near freezing.
The white herons where freezing their backsides off in a pasture on my side of the border … all that white and sunshine was too much for the camera so the pics turned out pretty bad.
At the stream it was windy and cold and fish where not active.
All I could muster was a small roach and a dace.

In the village I spotted some carp in the no fishing section and had
a few bites on the nymph but nothing stayed on.
When I moved to a new spot I noticed that I was missing the tip section of my rod, probably lost on the way somewhere.
I tracked back but could not find the tip section so the fishing session was over.

I did put out a call to the local flyfisherman in case somebody finds it but my best hope right now would be the spare part warehouse of Orvis for a replacement.

The weekend was weatherwise pretty miserable but next week the warmth will return and as I had spotted one swallow today hopes are high for good weather.

Out and about on this sunny warm en sometimes windy day.
The only thing that sucked today was the brook lamprey I encountered at the stream.
The decision to fish the urban setting did pay off as I found plenty of fish, just a shame I missed that larger trout that took my indicator.
The line kept running so I set the hook hoping the trout had taken the nymph .. appearantly not … i’ll be back.

Fishing wise not that good but for the rest another great day in the outdoors.
My botanical knowlegde was extended today as I found out that those smelly plants
I encountered where wild garlic (white flower).
I explored one of the feeder streams further than ever before and found a nice new spot allthough no fish where biting.

Urban sites fish … rural sites fishless.
The day started out cold and the wind did not help.
The cloudcover broke in the afternoon and from time to time the sun appeared.
Not much going on fishwise but the urban spot produced some good roach on the nymph.
The larger trout I had spotted previously was not at home.
The river is still running a tad high and warmer temperatures are needed to obtain some better fishing.

A lot colder than yesterday and a cloud covered windy start of the morning.
The urban site delivered despite the conditions.
A nymph with an indicator yielded some larger roach and a few dace.
When the sun came out in the afternoon some dace started to rise.
Had a go at a school under some bushes but after one landed fish the rest
was gone.

With countless dog walkers and cyclists moving along the path at the stream 
I soon had enough of the urban site and went out into the fields.
The river was still a bit up but the water was clear, no life to be seen though.
The last fish was a small brown trout.
I searched for the larger trout I had spotted yesterday but had no hits from 
the location where I had seen the fish earlier.

Another nice spring day that called for a visit to the river.
Water level was still up but clarity was good.
In the morning I could not spot fish except for one bold trout
that went airborne probably going after a single insect.
Not much going on with insect activity and frankly not with fish either.
The warmer afternoon got things going and I could at least catch
some dace and a few undersize brown trout.
The snowdrop bloom is completely over by now but the windflowers
have taken over and are covering the forest floor, typical sign of spring.
Might try some urban spots tomorrow as I suspect the fishing is better
there at the moment.

A quite late session on this day with not the weather I had hoped for.
On Friday it was a beautifull warm spring day but on Saturday the
skies where cloudy, it was chilly and eventually it started to rain.
With the huge amounts of rain from the last weeks the river was still
pushing a lot of water and some spots where not available to me
as I was walking around with too short wellies.
The plus side was that the water was pretty clear.
Fish where active but I found mostly very small fish, plenty of bites
but no takers.
Even the carp where actively roaming in the slow moving dammed
up section in front of a watermill.

I scouted various spots for fish and finally found a place where I
could see a lot of fish moving in the water.
Catching the fish was another thing and at first I had no luck getting bites.
A heavier nymph did the trick and I was on a roll.
The bonus fish of the day was a nice brown trout that put a good bend in the 4-weight trout bum rod I was using.
Obviously the river has been stocked again as trout season has opened.

Against better judgement I went fishing and it was a total washout.
The river was a flooding brown mess, not a chance in the world to catch a fish but as they say hope springs eternal so I had to try.
Pretty awfull weather with rain and snow mixed in, quite a change from
those bizarre hot days we had earlier.
