With last Sunday being warm and sunny I once again tried the chub section.
Off course against better judgment since it was too early for successful chub sessions.
I was pondering to purchase a day ticket for another syndicate downstream from my
usual chub haunts but decided against it.

Still I visited the spot from the other syndicate to see how things where panning out early season.
In hindsight a bad move as the spot was teeming with chub including one monster fish.
All I could do was staring at the fish out of my grasp.

I headed south to the waters I was allowed to fish in and in contrast to last time I spotted more fish.
Big fish and quite a few of them but all as wary as hell.
Tried hopper and mayfly to get them to eat on the surface but they spooked once the fly
landed on the water.

I had one hit of a small fish that got off.
Spotted a larger fish upstream from my vantage point and served a hopper upstream.
The fish turned and was about to gulp the hopper in but my weak point surfaced … early strike.
So the fish bolted … no show.

It looked like I was about to skunk when I spotted a school of dace.
Tied on a small sedge and caught the only fish of the day.
Targeted some other chub in the surface late in the afternoon but just could not get them
to strike the fly.

Further exposure to the heat, tall grass and unwilling chub seemed pointless so it was off to the pub.
My friend where already there and had arranged a cold one for me as I arrived.
When I told them about the early strike the replies where …. again?  oh well, season is not over yet.
When the hoppers arrive chances will be better to get a fish.

After that rather fruitless day hunting for the chub in the open fields I went back
troutfishing.
Again a sunny day but quite a chilly start and again that constant northeastern wind
blowing strongly over the land.

The pool in front of me had clear water and I could see some of the small shiners moving about.
More intriguing was however a silver shimmering from something larger on the bottom.
It was a trout and it just would not take any of the flies I presented.
The fish did not respond to a juicy mayfly drifting on top or a nymph or squirmy.

Last resort was to change colour on the squirmy, from the trusty pink to a tan version with
an orange beadhead.
I fished the fly deep close to the adjacent bank and the trout went it, a nice fish indeed.
The usual bycatch consisted of small rudd an roach.

Under a bridge I spotted another trout but all offering where ignored.
It was still quite early which made me confident enough to sneak to a spot that was
officially off limits.
It was really shallow and the only fish I could see where small shiners.
Then again I didn’t have x-ray vision so there could be something lurking in the rapid
flowing water.

The squirmy did not yield some takes, only nibbles from the shiners and those where
tail biters.
I opted for the perdigon nymph as it had a heavy tungsten bead and would be less
prone to updraft by the current.
That approach did the trick as I hooked a very nice patterned trout.

Later I moved to sections upstream to check upon the fish I had missed during my last visit.
With the wind the insect activity was sporadic.
Despite that I spotted that big trout from last time rising to a mayfly.
Had to cast downstream but alas no hit and a final dredging with a streamer was also
unsuccessful.

At another spot I once again noticed a rising fish which I interpreted as rising dace.
Tied on a small sedge and tossed it upstream, instant hit of a fish.
It was a small trout and boy it went ballistic several times.
The rest of the spots yielded some dace on the sedge but no signs of rising trout
anymore.

My arrival at the pub coincided with the leaving of most day-trippers so no
extensive waiting time for drink and food.
Ran into one of the fishing club members who had ordered the baked potatoes
with eggs and bacon, it looked tasty so I ordered it also.
First though a nice mushroom soup for starters.
Was so stuffed that there was no room for coffee and dessert anymore…

On Sunday it was off to the chub section for a second try at the chub.
First stop was just outside a small village where I had success in the past.
The plants at the bank were now about man high and you had to take
care where to step because of the holes dug by the muskrats.

The lack of aquatic vegetation was probably the cause of no visible fish.
I could spot nothing on the clear sand bottom except for one small fish.
That fish was target practice and it took the sedge I served with gusto.

Since I was not new to this spot I sought out the section with the most
cover where I spotted several medium sized fish with one behemoth
amongst them.
To bad that even the landing of the fly on the water caused the fish to bolt.

The presence of mayflies was minimal and only the small blue damselflies
attracted some of the small fish.
Time to move to another spot where I found a school of chub moving
upstream almost in casting range.

My first cast with a big fly yielded a strike from one of the fish but it missed
and the racked caused the school to move downstream again.
After a little wait they came in range again and this time I landed the fish.
Not a monster but a progress from fish nr. 1 of the day.

The final spot was a good stretch void of any disturbances, well I thought it
would be but reality was different.
I had forgotten that it was “Schützenfest” season in Germany, a tradition
from the past when villagers where enrolled in militia’s protection rural areas.
These days a social event involving fair with a shooting competition and off course
a lot of drink.

At this particular spot it also involved canoe trips for the kids at my intended
fishing spot …
There was just one thing left to do … off to the pub.

The goal for today was to get a trout on a big mayfly pattern.
I spotted one trout upstream from me that came for the mayfly but I struck to soon … fish gone.
Trout nr. 2 was close to the bank and hit the fly, solid hookup at least that was what I though.
It took one jump from the trout so get rid of the fly so no luck.

The third chance for a trout came soon as I spotted another one but it just would not
commit to anything I offered.
My last resort was to use a fly I had recently acquired … the mop fly.
Had no luck with that pattern last week but today it was the ticket for that picky trout.

Tossing nymphs, squirmies and sedges yielded some small roach, dace and rudd.
The water level had dropped considerably so fishing was tough.
Tomorrow I think I might hit the chub section again, maybe the combination of low
water and clear sunny skies might reveal some fish.

Saturday I went to the stream of syndicate nr. 1 hoping to catch a trout on a big mayfly.
To my horror one of my favourite spots was turned in to a marksman fair so no peace
and quiet for me.
Since it was still early so I gave it a shot, spotted a trout rising but could not get it.
Further upstream I scared another trout away.

When the crowds starting to arrive I split, better luck next week.
Next I tried our day ticket stretch and at first I struggled to get anything.
Despite the strong wind I spotted some BWO’s and some of the big Danica mayflies.

At one spot I noticed rising fish but decided not to use the dry fly because of the constant
stream of chestnut flower debris on the surface.
The Perdigon nymph worked wonders and I hauled in some nice dace which were pretty big
for this stretch of water.

The pool above the one I fished had a fish rising which made such a racket that it could only
be trout.  It was impossible for me to reach the spot with the dry fly due to the foliage.
I opted for the streamer and entered the water upstream from the trout. I drifted the streamer at the last known location of the trout and boy it came out of its
lair and went for the streamer.
The fish missed though and I could net get it to charge the fly a second time.

At some other spots I caught a few more dace and lost a small brown trout.
The beginning of the day ticket stretch had some more hiding places for a trout.
Just by chance I spotted a big one as the sunlight illuminated the spot where the
trout was hanging out.
Again impossible to reach by cast but as the fish moved under a deadfall I saw a chance.
I moved down the bank and dropped a nymph just over the deadfall.
The reaction of the trout was not the one I had hoped, it bolted and off it went.

Soon I spotted another rising trout but again foliage and debris in the water made casting
though. After getting stuck two times the game was over.
The last chance to get a trout would be in a recently cleared stretch of the forest.
That action pretty much killed the cover for the fish but maybe some where left.

The wind was by now pretty strong and left and right branches where flying of the trees.
With quite a few big dead trees leaning over the water a tricky day to be outside so
I took care where to walk.
Alas no rising fish to be seen and even the shiners seemed to have day off.

The last spot of the day was a pool where I had done well last season but it seemed
empty. The pool had deepened since last season so I tried fishing deep.
That did the trick as I was soon into a good fish that fought so deep that at first I
had the impression that it was a brook trout.

With the light tippet I fished I had to take utmost care fighting the fish and eventually
got it to the surface.
I was after all a common brown trout but a nice fish and icing on the cake for me.

On Friday I had the luminous idea to get the first Pike from the waters of syndicate nr. 2.
I was pretty sure I would get one from the mill pool but for some reason the only hit I got was from a perch who missed the fly.

In stark contrast to last week water levels had dropped considerably and it was now
obvious to see that the mill pool was pretty shallow.
I spotted some small dace surface feeding and noticed a carp moving about.
Small BWO’s where about plus some of the larger Danica mayflies.

The dry fly only yielded takes from tiny fish so I soon switched back to fishing nymph
and squirmy and eventually caught some dace and small perch.
I explored the waters downstream from the mill pool hoping to see a feeding trout
but the water was pretty dead.

I had spotted a quite large rudd in the surface of the mill pool and with the sun
getting low I wanted to see if I could catch that fish.
Unfortunately the strong wind pretty much killed the surface fishing as it rippled the
surface of the mill pool.

It would be a beautiful sunny day this Saturday the 13th, luckily the cat I passed on the
way was not black…
During the week it had rained on and off continuously, still I had not expected that it
would cause the stream to rise as much as it did.
Fly off choice was the squirmy as the water had less visibility than usual.

Insects where on the water but nothing was rising.
The probing of deep pool surprisingly did not yield any fish with the exception of a small roach.
I had one following trout as I tossed the squirmy under a bridge but could not coax a take.

Things where not going the way I wanted at my usual honey holes so I had to search for fish
elsewhere.
The way to go was downstream at a spot where a ditch entered the stream.
A few big rocks provided some structure and it usually held some dace.
I tossed in the squirmy and had an instant hit, not from a dace but from a trout.

I then decided to cross to the adjacent bank and climb the steep shore to get on the fields
to walk a good distance downstream.
I entered the stream again at a spot where an old dam had been removed.
The fast flowing water and stones could be a hiding spot for trout but it turned up empty.

I waded upstream from the old dam into a wide section with mainly sand bottom.
In general a featureless section but still holding dace over the sand.
The banks where of special interest as they where undercut with a little deeper water.
I got dace on the dry fly but switched soon to the squirmy again as I wanted to get another trout.

There where a few small deadfalls in this sandpit that caused some deeper pools
where I caught numerous dace.
At one of those deadfalls I ran into another trout who took me for a ride as it was larger than
the one I had caught before.

With the light tippet I had to take care fighting the fish, if it would go for the deadfall I would loose.
Luckily I managed to get the fish over the bright sand after a few hairy moments.
I was happy to land he fish in the end, almost 40cm / 16 inch.

While moving further upstream I noticed a few of the big mayflies  moving about.
Still not enough to raise the interest of the fish as my imitation was ignored.
This could change in a couple of weeks providing numbers are great enough.
Could be the ticket to get some trout in locations not fishable with nymph or streamer.

A look at the clock made me realize that it was later than I had expected so off to the pub.
With the main wave of day trippers gone home on this sunny day waiting time for chow was minimal.
Soup of the day was either Mushroom cream soup or Asparagus cream soup, I choose the latter.
Went for the Paprika Schnitzel again.

With the slightly higher temps I thought it might be a plan to check out the
chub section last Saturday.
Got lost more or less en route and came at the stream well above the chub section.
Spotted a couple of dace surface feeding and tried to get them on the dry but failed.

Action was very sporadic so I left to spots downstream to check on the chub.
In hindsight a month or two to early as all the regular spot where empty.
One spot I passed had some fish below a bridge with I deemed to be dace.
The rest of the hot spots totally empty and with still lacking aquatic plants meant
no hiding spots for any fish.

Skunk was imminent so on the way to the pub I stopped at the bridge to see if the
fish were still there.
Spotted the fish and tossed a small nymph in the current.
Got a take from one of the fish and it turned out to be the target species chub.
Small one but nonetheless the first of the season.

For the Sunday the weather forecast talked about heavy rains and thunderstorms.
Checked out the rain radar in the morning and chanced it.
Choose the forest stretched and fished with dries for Dace and caught a few.
Had two attacks on a strike indicator from a trout but could not get it too eat
any flies.

At one of the deeper pools I hooked a small trout but lost it.
Spotted a larger trout but whatever fly I tried it did not want to eat.

Tried it a last time before pub time and behold the squirmy finally convinced
the fish to strike, about 14″ brown which was pretty good.

Met up with friends at the pub who fished the guest stretch of our stream.
Again a day with East wind so fishing very slow, spotted enough insects
but somehow fish declined most offering this day.
At least the E-NE wind kept the heavy rainclouds well to the W-SW of my
locations so it stayed dry for most of the day.

For a change I tried some spots in the village hoping to do well with the silver fish.
Hopes where high but reality kicked soon in as I could not spot any fish and did not get any bites.
Many spots seemed shallower and I could not spot any fish.
Normally you would expect schools of dace and roach moving about this time of year.

In the end I found some tiny dace feeding in the surface and did some target practice with a dry fly.
This resulted in a tiny dace but it was the first fish caught on sight with a dry fly this season.
Could not find any larger dace roaming the stream though.
That whole village plan did not work at all so to save the day I went back to the spot where I had
previously caught the trout.

The location switch paid of as I landed two trout, missed two and landed a few dace.
Fly of choice was again the perdigon nymph with the squirmy being totally useless.
Ran into a buddy of mine but he blanked at the stretch he was fishing.

Overall the action was very slow despite seeing numerous BWO’s on the water and
some dace going for them.
Spring so far has been pretty cold in regards to previous years so I expect it
will take a while before the bite gets be

Yesterday we had Kings day here in the Netherlands so a day off from work.
A perfect day to go fishing at the neighbors.
With the clear skies the night before temperatures had plummeted to below freezing.
Went late to start my fishing session with some warmth.

A tad windy and not many bugs around but numbers where increasing.
Fished the good spots first with the perdigon nymph to no avail so quickly
changed to the squirmy.

That fly change helped and I got a small roach to show for.
Fish where present but not that eager to bite.
Had the luck to catch two brown trout from the pools where I knew they would hang out.
One of the browns went a few times ballistic, must have thought it was a rainbow.

Stayed not that long at stream nr.1 because I was eager to catch one
of those tiger trout that apparently had been stocked in  the mill pool of stream nr.2
First though it was chow time… I was hungry.

Second session only brought a roach, a rudd and a small perch.
When I fished the streamer I had a hit from a pike but the leader was severed.
There where a few bait guys around but I did not see them haul in any trout either.
Left the mill pool late as the clouds rolled in from a rain front.
